Tell me about mind obstacles you have or had.
Social anxiety and depression.
What do you do for self-care or self-help?
Hot showers, talking long walks, drinking tea, painting my nails
What is your ideal self-love date?
Self love is me spending the night in. Watching Netflix and eating pizza until three in the morning. It’s even better when it’s rainy outside.
Who are your role models?
I don’t really have any specific role models but nothing motivates me more than seeing other people have really great work habits and a passion for reaching their goals.
What is your favorite music?
I love all genres of music. Some of my favorite bands/artists are Calle 13, The Smiths, The Killers, Childish Gambino and M83
What are your passions?
One of my biggest passions is writing. I’ve been doing it since I was a kid and it’s one of the few things I’m good at. I also love travelling and documenting the places that I go through writing and photography.
Goal you’re trying to reach?
My goal is to eventually get a book published. Right now, I want to get into an MFA program for Creative Writing.
Advice for others?
Try not to stress about little things. Never lose track of your goals and where you want to go in life. Also it’s not your job to please others, make sure you’re happy first.

Tell me about mind obstacles you have or had.

Depression and anxiety. So basically, I want to do everything but get too mentally exhausted to do everything, then get anxious about things not getting done.
What do you do for self-care or self-help?
There are a lot things I do for myself, but the most prominent thing would have to be allowing myself to relax. I snuggle in my bed, I close my eyes, and I let myself daydream about whatever I want, no matter how weird or unattainable and it helps me to get the energy to get through the day. Daydreaming also helps my creative process.
What is your ideal self-love date?
I put on something that makes me feel cute and I go out socializing by myself. It’s been helpful in progressing as an artist, and as a person overall, for me to put myself into the world with no crutch and to almost train myself in being an extrovert. So, I get in a positive mindset, tell myself that I’m going to have a good time, and then I do just that.
Who are your role models?
The people I surround myself with all influence and inspire me in some way. My family, my friends, and even new people I meet, I feel, all have something positive for me to admire.
What is your favorite music?
Anything made with passion, really. “Diddy Bop” by Noname, “Simple Kind of Life” by NoDoubt, “Dark Red” by Steve Lacy, “The Base” by Enrique Jesus Hernandez, “For The Damaged Coda” by Blonde Redhead.
What are your passions?
Creativity and living in my truth regardless of how difficult it can be sometimes.
Goal you’re trying to reach?
In terms of short term, I have multiple goals regarding my music, art, and writing. But when it comes to the big picture my goal is serve my purpose on this earth as efficiently as I can, whatever that purpose may be.
Advice for others?
Do your best to be the most important person in your life. Take care of yourself the same way you would someone you love.— See her latest posts here.

Introduce yourself in one sentence: I’m a Mexican-American feminist working constantly to overcome sexual and childhood trauma.

Tell me about mind obstacles you have or had.
I struggle most with C-PTSD, depression, and anxiety.
What do you do for self-care or self-help?
Self-care: I love to do my nails, read poetry or true crime books, or learn about myself through others’ movies, writing, and music lyrics.
Self-help: I’m a big fan of therapy, both individual and group types. One of my biggest struggles was feeling isolated, but exposing myself to people who can understand and relate has helped me immensely.
What is your ideal self-love date?
Throwing on Goodfellas or Death Wish 3 and smearing on a face mask or playing around with makeup.
Who are your role models?
Courtney Love for her brash and unapologetic femininity, Charles Bukowski for his honesty, Roseanne Barr for her humor and strength, and Kanye West for his ability to be shamelessly himself.
What is your favorite music?
I love a lot of different kinds of music, but I tend to gravitate the most to alternative rock (and I have a strong attachment to 90s grunge). Currently I’m discovering the magic that is Bruce Springsteen while I take in his entire catalogue.
What are your passions?
Collecting old, weird, antique books and memorabilia, drawing in my sketch diary, and taking in art in all its forms.
Goal you’re trying to reach?
“Before my death I hope to obtain my life.” – Charles Bukowski
My ultimate goal is to mend the broken places in me and make them stronger. My life has been largely impacted by the decisions of others; I couldn’t control my circumstances in childhood, so I work every day to improve my future.
Advice for others?
Don’t settle for what is good enough for other people. Healing, growing, and living are all a process. No one else can dictate what the “correct” path is for you. Some things work for many, some things don’t, but what is most important is that it helps you.— Contact Janie via Instagram @TheStrangeisBeautiful.
