Sadcore Sundays: “Adam’s Song” by Blink 182

Sadcore Sundays: "Adam's Song" by Blink 182

It’s the 20th anniversary of Blink 182’s album “Enema of the State,” so we’re featuring a song from it about depression, suicidal ideations, and loneliness called “Adam’s Song.” At the time, bassist and singer Mark Hoppus felt he didn’t have any right to be depressed because their album, tour and band were hugely successful. Because of this, he didn’t want to talk about it with anyone. However, once he released the song, many fans resonated with his feelings and expressed their support. I hope this song provides a cathartic relief for anyone struggling with depression or feeling unworthy of being sad. Regardless of how well off you are or how many great things are going on in your life, you can have depression, and you are worthy of those emotions.

Sadcore Sundays: “Creep” by Radiohead

Sadcore Sundays: "Creep" by Radiohead

This week, I found out my younger cousin is also a Radiohead fan, and that one of his favorite song’s of theirs is “Creep.” I had forgotten how much I used to love that song. The iconic “But I’m a creep, I’m a weirdo” line resonated with me in middle school, high school, and still now, as I’ve always felt like an outcast. Even though, in context of the song, that line has a negative connotation, I felt a sense of strength and pride like, fuck it, I am a creep, I am a weirdo, I don’t know what the hell I’m doing here, and I’m gonna own that. I hope this song helps you embrace your strange and beautiful self.

Sadcore Sundays: “I’m So Tired” by Fugazi

Sadcore Sundays: "I'm So Tired" by Fugazi

One time when I couldn’t fall asleep, my friend looped “I’m So Tired” by Fugazi, and it was the only thing that got me to finally enter dream world. The piano chords seem to trudge up a flight of stairs, slowly turning the knob of your bedroom door, and belly flopping on to your mattress in extreme exhaustion and burnout. Meanwhile, his voice is a gentle lullaby, taking your shoes and socks off that you were too tired to remove yourself, tucks you in, and turns the light off.
