Holiday Horrors, Body Image, and Happiness

"When the holidays turn into something to 'get through' rather than something to celebrate, it is time to take another look because something is wrong."

“When the holidays turn into something to “get through” rather than something to celebrate, it is time to take another look because something is wrong,” said Carolyn Costin, founder of eating disorder treatment center Monte Nido Vista, in a recent blog post.

The holidays are approaching, warranting advertisements to “stuff yourself” following post-holiday marketing to set New Year’s goals to lose weight, as well “expectations of how it’s “supposed” to be, strained family relationships, not having a loved one, not having enough time to do all the holiday stuff, money troubles and more.”

It’s all tom-foolery, so the topic until Valentine’s day is “Holidays and Self Love.”

What’s the point of the holidays? Why am I miserable during the holidays?!?!

The intention of the holidays is be grateful for yourself, and for all that you have. It’s to surround yourself and thank those who love and appreciate you, and not just by a significant other. People tend to be miserable during the holidays because of the expectations they set – they must be in a relationship, they must receive this present, they must eat this to be seen as normal by themselves and by society.

But does another person, an object, or a place define your happiness? Our articles on “Holidays and Self-Love” will fully explore this question.
